What is a "complete medical checkup of the brain"?
The purpose of the checkup is to find any abnormality
before brain infarction or hemorrhage occurs. The brain checkup
is best-suited for the people who:
1. are now healthy, but are worried about the possibility of stroke;
2. feel heavy-headed or light headed, have numbness of the limb
or
mouth, ringing in the ears, blurred vision or memory loss;
3. have family members who have suffered stroke.
What kind of workups are carried out?
MRI of the head and MRA are essential for this checkup. Both of these tests are harmless. We also check other risk factors of brain infarction such as high blood pressure, diabetes or hyperlipemia.
What can be found at the checkup?
1. Unruptured aneurysm: Major cause of the subarachnoid hemorrhage, one of the causes of the sudden death, is rupture of brain aneurysm. Our MRI can detect 3mm-diameter aneurysm. Brain checkup can find brain aneurysm at 4% rate. When a parent or sibling suffers subarachnoid hemorrhage, the percentage of the appearance will rise up to 10%.
2. Asymptomatic cerebral infarction: Brain infarction is death of a section of tissue when blood supply to the section fails as the result of obstruction of a blood vessel. The obstruction may be due to a blood clot or may result from narrowing of the blood vessel channel. Many develop paralysis or speech disorder. However, the brain checkup has been finding many asymptomatic cerebral infarction, the cerebral infraction without any symptoms.
3. Brain tumor: Not all the tumors are malignant. Early recognition and treatment can minimize the sequelae.
